A 3-minute movement break at work with Data2Dao
Between meetings, stand your phone on your desk, run a 3-minute battle or a few small-space shoulder moves, then one round of 4-7-8 breathing. A real walkthrough, moves that suit a small space, and how to make it a habit.
Short answer
Stand your phone upright on your desk or a shelf. On the Battle tab, choose 3 min and Light difficulty, then tap “Start Battle”. Short on space? Use “Choose practice” to pick upper-body moves such as Shoulder Circles and Side Stretch. Finish with 1 minute of 4-7-8 breathing. No change of clothes, no equipment.
One thing to know: Data2Dao won't remind you to get up. You choose the moment—after lunch, say, or after a regular afternoon meeting.
Why start with three minutes
Three minutes is the shortest stage in Data2Dao and the easiest length to fit into a workday: you're not away from your desk for long, you don't need to change, and a little warmth won't get in the way of your next meeting.
It isn't a magic number. What matters is actually standing up and moving after a long stretch of sitting. Once it sticks, move up to 5 or 8 minutes.
A real walkthrough
Here's one full workday break, about 4–5 minutes, described with the Data2Dao 1.0 interface.
- Set up the phone (about 30 seconds). Stand it upright on a desk, shelf or chair with the front camera facing you, then step back until at least everything above your knees is in view. See the camera setup guide for details.
- Run a short battle (3 minutes). On today's stage card in the Battle tab, set the length to “3 min” and difficulty to “Light”, then tap “Start Battle”. Every move you complete is a strike from your cat.
- Or pick your own moves. In “Choose practice”, select moves by body part or by routine, with 30–90 seconds per set and 15–60 seconds of rest; the summary shows roughly how many minutes it adds up to. Moves have to be learned in the Skills tab before you can add them.
- Breathe for one round (1 minute). Open meditation, choose 1 minute and follow the 4-7-8 rhythm (in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8). The session is saved to Apple Health as mindful minutes.
- It lands on your Path. Battles and meditation appear on your Path timeline automatically.
Moves for a small space
In an office or a bedroom, favor moves that only need your upper body in view. Jump claps, high knees and push-ups are louder and sweatier—save them for home.
| Move | Needs in frame | Why it suits a work break |
|---|---|---|
| Shoulder Circles | Arms | Works close to the camera and takes no space |
| Knee-Bent Arm Circles | Arms | Small range of motion—fine beside your desk |
| Arm Swings | Upper body | “Close-range move” in the pause menu switches to it |
| Side Stretch | Head and shoulders to hips | Opens up the sides of your body after sitting; leave room above your raised hand |
| Wall Angel | Upper body | Find a wall and keep your back against it |
| Squat | Shoulders, hips, knees | Add it when there's room, so your legs move too |
There's no seated mode yet; all of these are done standing.
Make it a habit
- Pick a fixed time yourself. The app only sends morning, wind-down, streak and come-back notifications—two a day at most—and none of them tell you to stand up. Use your calendar or Reminders for a regular slot, such as right after lunch.
- Switch your goal to “Shoulder & Neck Relief”. It focuses on relieving tension from sitting, and changing your goal updates the training focus for the next 28 days.
- Put a widget on your Home Screen. The “Today's practice” and “Streak” widgets show at a glance whether you've moved today.
- Take leave when you need it. Every 7-day chapter includes two leave days that cost no Qi—or do a short meditation and count the day's stage as a meditation clear.
Stay safe
- Look around before you start: mind desk corners, chairs and cables.
- In work clothes or shoes, choose small-range moves at Light difficulty.
- Stop immediately if you feel pain, dizziness or chest tightness, and contact a medical professional if discomfort is severe, persistent or recurring.
- After you log pain or discomfort, the app holds back higher joint-load moves that work that area until it eases.
