Working out at home with an iPhone: camera apps, console fitness games, videos or a smartwatch?

Only have an iPhone, a few minutes and a small space? Camera-based apps, console fitness games such as Ring Fit Adventure, follow-along videos and smartwatches compared in one table—what you need, whether reps are counted, session length and who each suits—plus who Data2Dao is and isn't for.

· For app version 1.0

Short answer

Just a phone, a few minutes a day, and you want feedback on every rep: pick a camera-based app. Own a game console and want a longer, richer game: pick a console fitness game such as Ring Fit Adventure. Want a coach to teach you full routines: pick follow-along videos. Want heart rate, steps and sleep tracked all day: wear a smartwatch—it works alongside any of the other three.

Data2Dao is in the first group: the front camera of an iPhone or iPad recognizes squats, side stretches and more on the device, in stages of 3, 5 or 8 minutes. It's free to download; full practice is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US.

Four options in one table

Compared by what you need, whether your reps are counted for you, how long a session runs and who it suits best. Products within each group vary a lot; the table describes what's typical.

Camera-based apps (e.g. Data2Dao)A phone or tablet and about 1.5–2.5 m (5–8 ft) of open floorYes—the camera sees each repFrom a few minutesPeople with only a phone, scattered free minutes and a need for instant feedback

When a camera-based app is the best fit

  • No console, and you'd rather not buy accessories. Your phone is already here; stand it up and start.
  • Your free time comes in pieces. A few minutes after lunch, between meetings, before bed.
  • You want to be counted. Feedback on every rep is easier to stick with than counting along to a video.
  • You're short on space. In a bedroom or office, stepping back until the camera sees you from the knees up is enough.
  • Privacy matters to you. Check whether frames are processed on the phone or uploaded. Data2Dao never saves or uploads its camera frames.

What Data2Dao is like

Data2Dao turns exercise into a cultivation adventure: every move you finish is a strike from your orange cat. Unlike most camera workout apps, it also uses the Apple Health data you allow—sleep, resting heart rate and HRV—to work out today's Qi and help decide how much to do and when to rest.

When it isn't right for you

Recommending an app means saying what it can't do, too:

  • You use an Android phone. It's only on iPhone and iPad for now.
  • You want a weights or equipment-based strength program. Data2Dao focuses on bodyweight moves, stretches and follow-along routines.
  • You want a live coach or real-time form correction. It counts reps and guides your position, but it isn't a coached class.
  • You need to exercise seated. There's no seated mode yet; every move is done standing.
  • The camera can't see you from the knees up. Most moves need your shoulders, hips and knees in view.
  • You need it fully offline. Accounts, subscriptions, leaderboards and voice features need a connection.
  • You need medical rehab. It supports everyday exercise habits and doesn't diagnose or treat anything.

A checklist before you download

  1. Your iPhone or iPad runs iOS / iPadOS 18.0 or later.
  2. You have somewhere to stand the phone upright: a stand, a shelf or a chair.
  3. You can step back about 1.5–2.5 m (5–8 ft) so the camera sees you from the knees up.
  4. The room is bright enough, with no window or strong light right behind you.
  5. Try camera recognition once in the free introduction before deciding on a subscription.

For placement details, see the camera setup guide.
